MORE NIGERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS NOW ANTI-HUMAN TRAFFICKING SAVVY!

…MIAHWRA Educates About 200 HIGH School Kids

The Media Initiative Against Human trafficking and Women Rights Abuse ( MIAHWRA ) this week taught about 200 secondary school students how to be anti-human trafficking savvy.
Beginning on Monday March 27th at Cathrina International School, Gwarinmpa, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, MIAHWRA’s #IAmNotToBeSold #EndHumanTrafficking train moved through the city to the Government Secondary School Lugbe- a suburb in Abuja.
Targeting the final year Senior Secondary School Students (SSS 3) who are writing their final exams in preparation to moving onto the larger society, Ms. Tobore Ovuorie, Executive Director and Mr. Lawson Oviasogie, Head, Northern Operations of the nonprofit taught the students the ABC of human trafficking and how to prevent being trafficked.
Ms. Ovuorie told the students about the various ways traffickers now operate. However, she encouraged them to apply for scholarships abroad with very good high school results. “Legitimate travels is the way to go. If you don’t have needed travel documents, please, remain in Nigeria” she admonished the kids.
The curious students had several questions about human trafficking, while a student at the Government Secondary School, Lugbe, admitted to already being persuaded to be shipped off to Qatar after his exams.
“Since the person told me about coming to Qatar to be an electrician, it has occupied my mind for so long now. He said the travel will be free, and a job is awaiting me there” the 16 year old SSS 3 student told Ms. Ovuorie and Mr. Oviasogie after the outreach.
“I will go to the university to study electrical engineering. Thanks for telling us in the class that those ‘workand-live-free’ adverts are fake. I won’t make the mistake again” the young man added.
When schools resume for the third term academic session, MIAHWRA will be giving out scholarships to very outstanding but indigent students who can not afford their school fees or pay for external examination registration fees.
Admitting such students exist at the Government Secondary School Lugbe, the Principal and Vice Principal respectively agreed to make available a list of such students to MIAHWRA.

2017 VALENTINE DAY: Nigerian Secondary School Students Got Anti-humantrafficking Savvy

A few scenes from the event

There is no better way to commemorate the St. Valentine Day than sharing vital information on self protection with children.

Over 150 secondary school students of Royal Kriston Group of Schools, Lagos  in Nigeria celebrated the 2017 valentine day learning the A-Z of human trafficking and how not to fall preys to traffickers.

When the Executive Director of the Media Initiative Against Human trafficking and Women Rights Abuse ( MIAHWRA ), Ms. Tobore Ovuorie, first picked the microphone and asked how many of the kids will love to go overseas at all cost, they all raised their hands.

While teaching the kids, majority of  who were hearing about  human trafficking for the first time, many of them were given copies of MIAHWRA’s human trafficking anthology titled ” I Am Not To Be Sold ” for free.

The school was equally given free copies.

The awareness outreach equally involved MIAHWRA’s Movieducate 4 Change (#M4C). The kids were shown a short film on human trafficking. Many of them were shocked at the horror victims of trafficking go through.

At the end of the session, when asked how many of them will love to go overseas at all cost, none of the students raised their hands.

“I won’t even follow you abroad if you approach me” a 2nd year Senior Secondary School Student told Ms. Ovuorie.

Very curious and worried about what they had watched in the short film, some of the students walked up to Ms. Ovuorie when she was close to the school’s exit gate. She was bombarded with very intelligent questions.

The helms woman of MIAHWRA however answered all the questions. She encouraged the students to come up with more questions and send them to her through the school authority.

The students of Royal Kriston Group of Schools are participating in MIAHWRA’s 2017 Short Stories Collection competition with the theme: I AM Not To Be Sold.

THIS GOT ME REFIRED, RE-ENERGIZED AND HUMBLED…!!!

By Dammie Ojekunle

God bless you real big (Tobore Mit Ovuorie)….

There’s no other person to deliver and spread the human trafficking word like you.

The highlight today for me was when you first took the mic and you asked the kids “Who wants to travel abroad?”

They all raised up their hands.

But before you dropped the mic, you asked the same question again.

Hmmm, I am convinced the little you have shared with them has opened up their mind and they are no longer ignorant of the word #HUMANTRAFFICKERS #HUMANTRAFFICKING

Thanks for letting me tag along. No better way to spend the day.

My name is Ojekunle Oluwadamilare #IAMNOTTOBESOLD.
I say no to human trafficking.
